The game is harder than it used to be because they reduced the number of local listings on page one from seven to three. Now, you have to have one of the three best pages for you to be shown there. It’s not easy, but it can be done.
The great news is that businesses ranking in the local map generate a lot of calls.

Why Are Local SEO Services Important For Roofers?
Imagine this – last night while you were sleeping a storm rolled through your area dropping a lot of rain. Naturally, some homeowners are going to find out this morning that they have a leaking roof.
Most people feel a bit of stress when they discover their roof is leaking. They want the issue resolved before their possessions are damaged. Some know that a roof leak that doesn’t get fixed can lead to expensive damage to the home itself.
When they go searching for a solution, most will be online looking for information. Consumers often will search using a combination of terms – things like “(your city) + roofing contractor.”
The search results page (SERP) will show:
- Ads at the top (usually 4 of them)
- The map listing (only three companies are shown)
- The organic listings at the bottom (the ten blue links)
In a perfect world, one where the company is the dominant roofer in the area, you’re found in all three places. We call that “triple optimization, full service” and it’s a favorite strategy for full-service clients.

Keys To Local SEO Success
To start with, getting set up on Google My Business requires a physical address. It can be your office but if you work from home that will work too.
Here are the most important things to remember:
- Your main website has to be set up correctly
- The Business listing on Google needs to include certain information
- You’ll want to have several “authority” properties linked to your site to drive the ranking of your site/pages
- Reviews on Google are super important, so get as many as you can
On your website, you’ll need to have a list of all of the areas you want to provide services to and develop a service areas page with it. Not long ago it was popular to develop a whole series of pages for each separate service area, but now the best practices tell us to just create one page with all of the service areas listed.
With GMB, you’ll either need to create or claim your page (you may know it as Google Local, Google +, Google Places, etc.) and you can do that at the Google My Business center. Before you create a page, do a quick search to see if one already exists. A simple way to do that is to search in Google for your phone number and/or your address.
Some Additional Things To Remember
A physical address is needed because Google will send a postcard by mail to verify that it’s your address.
Ranking your page properly requires a mix of local “NAP citations” (directory listings) as well as some organic SEO signals.
Authority properties are sites like YouTube, WordPress.com sites, and your social media properties (like your Facebook page, LinkedIn, etc.).
Essential to all of these sites is that the name, address and phone number (NAP info) you use. Be consistent and if possible make them all the same. Otherwise, Google may believe that you have more than one location, get confused and not rank your site correctly. You don’t want that.
Also know that your reviews, especially those who review you on Google are critical to getting you ranked. We’ve seen cases where a client of ours ranks in the top 3 map listings in about a dozen communities.
